We lose hair everyday… normally, around 100-150 strands per day and that is simply from brushing and manipulating the hair. It may seem like a large amount but normally our body reproduces hair to accommodate that. If hair is coming out in clumps, or circular patches of balding spots appear, you might have a problem that should be looked at. Following are the most common causes for hair loss in women:
- Unbalanced Diet: An unbalanced diet, especially a low protein diet, can cause temporary hair loss. In addition, it is known, that there is a higher rate of hair loss in anemic Women.
- Menopause (cessation of menstruation): Because of the change in hormones during this period, hair loss can escalate, and in some cases it can be permanent.
- Improper Care: extensive manipulation of the hair: color, blow drying, heat with curling irons and hot irons, you will see increased hair loss. You need only to look at your bathroom floor, sink and counter tops to notice this. Slow down!
Frequent Shampooing: most shampoos contain a lathering ingredient called surfactant. Surfactant can cause irritation to the scalp and itching and scratching, thus increased hair loss. - Psychological/Physiological Stress: Increased hair loss such as in Alopecia-Areata (please see section), can be triggered by various life events that lead to mental and/or physical stress – demanding work environment, major surgery, death of a relative, divorce and personal or family circumstances. It can all cause a temporary hair loss (from couple of month to couple of years) and hair growth will return to normal eventually. Both conventional and alternative medicines offer various treatments that can stimulate hair follicles to reproduce hair.
- Alopecia-Areata: This is an autoimmune condition characterized by circular patches of baldness. Basically, the body is attacking the hair follicles. Cortisone shots in the affected areas are required, and the earlier the better. Take heart. There’s a lot of research going on which may soon resolve most of the causes of hair loss in women. However, there are great products that have been proven effective. One product that received quite a lot of positive reviews from users is Provillus: it is an oral supplement, which works to block DHT,
a form of testosterone that is responsible for 95 percent of hair loss. It also works to stimulate the scalp and bring dead follicles back to life. You can use Provillus as a preventative tool, starting the program before hair loss becomes severe, or you can use it after DHT has already begun to take hold of your hair and scalp. - Other Health Conditions: Diabetes, Thyroid problems and lupus can accelerate hair loss. Require to be diagnosed by a physician.
- Genetics: Heredity plays a part and comes from both sides of the family.
